Entrepreneurship Speaker Series Launch in Johannesburg

Africa Club is proud to announce the first in our planned series of entrepreneurial talks, based in Africa. Each talk will feature an inspirational story of entrepreneurial success, focusing on the speaker's individual journey, to deliver learnings and insights with a particular focus on the unique opportunities and challenges entrepreneurship in Africa brings.

This first talk in our series will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Monday December 2nd 2013 at 7p.m. (SAST) and will be hosted by Rand Merchant Bank (part of the FirstRand Group). The event is open to alumni, professionals, friends and partners of the Africa Cub in Johannesburg, as well as students, staff and faculty visting on the GBE. We will feature two speakers: Mr. Sizwe Nxasana (CEO, FirstRand) and Dr. Peter Karungu (Founder & CEO, Synthecon). See attachments for event details and detailed speaker biographies.

Sizwe Nxasana is a true entrepreneur and visionary. Beginning with his time as founding partner of Nkonki Sizwe Ntsaluba, the first black-owned national firm of accountants in South Africa, followed by years as CEO of Telkom SA, where he spearheaded the company's transformation in a period of regulatory change, he has continued to establish a tremendous example of principled African leadership and entrepreneurial courage. Under his guidance, FirstRand group, despite its enormous size and position as one of Africa's largest banking groups, maintains a culture of entrepreneurship at its heart. Amongst numerous recent accolades, FNB (a member of the FirstRand Group) was recognised globally as the world's most innovative bank in 2012.

Peter Karungu is a professor of Economics and CEO/Founder of Synthecon, a leading biotechnology company in South Africa that was founded in 2007 with the primary objective of providing the African continent with high quality affordable surgical sutures. Competing directly with multinationals in the pharmaceutical industry, the company has grown exponentially since inception and today counts sales in over a dozen African countries, boasting one of the world’s foremost manufacturing facilities. Synthecon is Peter Karungu’s second entrepreneurial venture. In 1997, jointly with other academics, he founded KNC & Associates, a respected think tank that articulates issues on empowerment and compassionate economics, and counts organisations such as USAID, the European Union and WK Kellogg Foundation amongst its clients.
